December is a time for long nights and short days so the Norwegians make this time of year all about Hyyge: A sense of cosiness and wellbeing with warm sheepskins, log fires and candlelights.
Our Northern Lights Charters offer the chance to see this atmospheric phenomenon whilst experiencing Hygge and fine food aboard the beautiful Gåssten. At only 3 days and 2 nights this is the perfect mini adventure before the Christmas Holidays.
Gåssten, your vessel for the trip, is a beautifully restored naval vessel, one of the last wooden Swedish Navy ships ever built. Converted to a very high standard, she sleeps 10 in a combination of double and twin berths each with their own ensuite bathroom and original features. All of the cabins either served as the original officers’ quarters or munitions stores. This is an opportunity to experience a piece of Swedish Naval History.
There can be no better way to experience Norway’s stunning coastline, than aboard this unique and elegantly converted wooden naval ship. Read full details about our beautiful vessel and her recent refit here, Gåssten.
We start our mini adventure in the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund. This time of year Ålesund is a mass of twinkling lights and everywhere hotels, restaurants and bars have welcoming cosy corners to sit in and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. After exploring the town Gåssten will cast off and make the relatively short steam to the quiet anchorages in the archipelago. With nightfall coming early in the afternoon and the light pollution of the town far behind us, this gives an excellent chance for star gazing and seeing the swirling Northern Lights. Dinner and drinks will be served in the cozy saloon, among sheepskins and warm lighting. Very Hygge!
After a leisurely breakfast at anchor Gåssten navigates her way to Hjørundfjord, perhaps the most magnificent of all the fjords. We make the most of the short daylight hours taking in the breathtaking views and sumptuous scenery. This time of year offers the chance to see pods of whale and Orca as well as Sea Eagles coming in to shelter from the North Atlantic winter storms.
As the sun sets early in the afternoon, we make our way to the town of Øye, home of the famous Hotel Union. Guests are invited to have a drink by the fire of the wonderful hotel before she shuts her doors winter. Dinner is served back onboard and reflects all things Norwegian. Lutefisk may be served, which is a local delicacy served at Christmas time and can be washed down with a glass of local Aquavit. After dinner, another chance to wrap up warm and star gaze on the top deck.
We leave the mooring in Øye as the sun peeks above the horizon. A lazy breakfast is served as Gåssten steams back to Ålesund, with the gentle drum of the engine keeping us in the wonderfully Hygge state of mind. Guests are invited to explore Ålesund at their leisure before taking their onward transportation.
