HMS Gåssten

Unique Accommodation

Gåssten, your vessel for the trip, is a beautifully restored naval vessel, one of the last wooden Swedish Navy ships ever built. Converted to a very high standard, she sleeps 10 in a combination of double and twin berths each with their own ensuite bathroom and original features. All of the cabins either served as the original officers’ quarters or munitions stores. This is an opportunity to experience a piece of Swedish Naval History.

There can be no better way to experience Norway’s stunning coastline, than aboard this unique and elegantly converted wooden naval ship. Read full details about our beautiful vessel and her recent refit here, Gåssten.

A Taste of the Trip

Day One

Getting settled

The crew of HMS Gåssten will welcome you aboard where you will be introduced to all of those who will be looking after you for the week.

After getting settled into your cabin, we will check equipment and depart Ålesund, weaving our way through the narrow inland channels before heading into open sea and towards the mouth of Hjorundfjord, as featured in the BBC Brian Cox series, ‘Wonders of the Universe’. The days journey will end at Sagafjord, where we tie up alongside the tiny turfed roofed village of Sæbø for the evening. There will be time for a short paddle on the water before dinner, or for those that wish to stretch their legs, there is a short hike to a viewing point built by the locals.

Day Two

Bjørke

After breakfast and perhaps a swim, we cast off and head out towards Bjørke, and the picturesque village of Finnes.

You will be dropped off en route, paddling along the coast, skirting the massive cliffs, and keeping your eyes peeled for any whale or orca sightings. The boat will be waiting for you at the head of the fjord. Before dinner at anchor in the bay outside Bjørke there will be plenty of time to swim from the boat or jump off the roof (for the brave!) or to go fishing with our small tender.

Day Three

Øye and the Hotel Union

After a morning dip and a good breakfast you will paddle away from Bjørke, with Gåssten close by.

When you are ready and hungry we will bring you back on board for a leisurely lunch on deck. After lunch we head for Øye and the Hotel Union. This is a magical place surrounded on three sides by towering peaks. After an afternoon of paddling, Gåssten will be waiting for you, lying at anchor in the shadow of the mighty, Mount Slogen. This is one of our all time favourite wild swimming spots, it is simply incredible. Before dinner the crew will run you ashore so you can have a drink and explore the famous, Hotel Union, frequented by European royalty, world renowned authors and famous explorers.

Day Four

Valldall in Storfjorde

After an early start we pull anchor and head out of Hjorundfjord heading for Valldal.

Breakfast will be served under way as we cruise through the fjords watching the World go by. We aim to be in Valldal by mid afternoon. After a paddle board along some vertical cliff edges (if you look closely you will see the ‘Baddies Lair’ from the movie ‘Ex Machina’ nestled into the cliffs). This an excellent place for spotting sea eagles and also fishing for mackerel.

Day Five

Waterfalls in Geiranger

After another early start with breakfast en route we head for the famous Geiranger Fjord and the ‘Seven Sisters Waterfalls’.

The journey there is beautiful but the fjord itself is simply epic. This is Norways most famous fjord and as a result cruise ships are allowed to visit but not stay overnight so we might encounter one or two on our travels! When we reach the ‘Seven Sisters’ everyone wants to jump off the boat and swim! It is an incredible photo opportunity. After lunch on board or ashore by the waterfalls we drop you off and you will paddle past the falls and along the cliff edges all the way to the harbour at the head of the Fjord. Geiranger is a charming little village with miniature Hobbit houses and quirky pubs to grab a beer ashore before retuning to Gåssten for dinner.

Day Six

Ålesund

We depart Geiranger early this morning .

Guests sleep in to the gentle rumble of the engines before coming up on deck for their scenic fjord breakfast. We aim to be back in Ålesund in good time so we can enjoy a swim en route for those that wish to, but also to take a final, late afternoon paddle through the centre of town, around the old wooden fish markets and under the historic ‘Lovers Bridge’ before returning to your home for the week and a farewell dinner on board.
